Calling all Science and Physics Teachers - Zooteach Workshop to be Hosted by ICG, July 19th 2012

The University of Portsmouth, in collaboration with Zooniverse, will host a free Citizen Science workshop on the 19th July 2012, 4.30-6.30pm. This is a great Continuing Professional Development opportunity for all Science / Physics teachers and all those interested in developing Citizen Science in their schools. Further details regarding the session are below along with a flyer promoting the session. '''Citizen Science Workshop, 19th July 2012''' Are you interested in getting your students to contribute to authentic scientific research? Over half a million citizen scientists are contributing to the cutting edge research projects that make up www.zooniverse.org. Beginning in 2007 with galaxy classification at www.galaxyzoo.org, there are now 12 projects ranging from transcribing ancient Greek papyri to analysing light curves in the search for exo-planets. Science and Physics teachers are invited to join us for a free workshop to hear more about two of our latest secondary school education resources. ZooTeach is a website for sharing lesson plans and resources that will help teachers build citizen science into their curriculum, and an exciting Galaxy Zoo classroom tool that connects astronomy to maths by examining the statistical relationships between students' galaxy classifications. This teacher workshop will be presented by Dr. Laura Whyte, from the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Laura has been developing Zooteach and Galaxy Zoo Interactive for the Zooniverse in collaboration with other scientists and educators at the Adler Planetarium and the University of Oxford. Laura is a British astronomer turned teacher. She completed a PhD in astronomy from Nottingham University and a PGCE in Secondary Maths from Nottingham Trent before moving to the USA. She's passionate about getting Zooniverse education tools into UK schools. Dr. Karen Masters and other researchers at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth are members of the professional scientific research team behind the Galaxy Zoo project. Dr. Masters will also be available to talk with during the workshop.
